In the town of Tyrnavos, in the PGI Tyrnavos area, located in the region of Thessaly in Central Greece resides Domaine Zafeirakis where the Zafeirakis family has been practicing viticulture for more than 100 years.
Christos Zafeirakis, the 4th generation winemaker of the family after his studies and various stages in Italy, returned to Tyrnavos and planted his first organic vineyard in 2005.
“Love, Knowledge, and Respect to Tradition are the core elements for the creation of our wines as our goal is to deliver the expression of our vineyards, its aromas and flavor in your glass" Christos Zafeirakis.
Our Vineyards
Tyrnavos, located in the foothills of Mount Olympus, the seat of the mythical Greek gods, has for centuries been one of the main wine producing regions of Greece and since 1990 when it was established is part of the PGI Tyrnavos viticultural area.
Ever since its establishment in Tyrnavos, Domaine Zafeirakis focused on sustainable practices to create wines which respect the man and the environment. Sustainability principles have been employed in the long path to reaching that goal.
Vineyard management is carefully designed, aiming for minimal intervention and the preservation of biodiversity in the environment.
The cultivation, in practice organic since 2005, is certified by Biohellas with the latest parcels aiming to be converted by the end of 2022.
Biodynamic practices have also been applied since 2019.
Today, Domaine Zafeirakis owns and cultivates more than 12 hectares of vineyards mainly in the areas of Paleomylos and Kampilagas planted with indigenous Greek varieties, like Limniona and Malagousia, and international selections, like Chardonnay and Syrah.
Paleomylos vineyards are planted in sandy-clay, high flint and low calcium concentration soil offering early-maturation with elegance and a brackish character.
Kampilaga vineyards are planted in clay soil with high calcium concentration and, as centuries ago it was a lake, the soil benefits from high concentration of trace elements and has a resistance to drought.
The Creation Process
RED WINES
Organic / Biodynamic Wines - Biodynamic Cultivation - Biodynamic Farming
Following the PGI Tyrnavos guidelines, classic red wine vinification method is applied for the Limniona wines, in 3000L and 5000L Austrian oak wooden tanks without the use of yeast. The extraction lasts for 17-24 days and the malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barrels. Maturation will continue in 1200L, 2400L, 3000L and 5000L new and old barrels and/or amphorae while after bottling they are aged in the bottle for another 12 months.
The Winery
Domaine Zafeirakis winery is located, in the PGI Tyrnavos area, next to its privately owned vineyards ensuring minimum transportation time of the fruits to production facilities during harvest.
The state-of-the-art machinery and production equipment cover most of the area of the 2000 m2 of the building while on the underground cellar the wines mature in the oak casks and amphorae.
